Cloth pads | FAQ | 8 Myths | Buy it
1. Why should I choose organic cotton washable postpartum/menstrual pads over disposables?
Sckoon Pads are made of 100% certified Egyptian organic cotton; the softest, most absorbent, and breathable cotton in the world, making them comfortable and irritant free. Our Organic Night Pads, designed for heavy flows, are also perfect for postpartum use, providing cushioning and extra comfort to ease postpartum pain. While the convenience of disposables may seem obvious, other things are not so apparent.
Various chemicals, including dioxin, have been found in almost every major brand of menstrual pads and tampons available. Dioxin is a known carcinogen and even low levels of exposure have been linked to cervical and breast cancer, endometriosis, and immune system suppression.
If dioxin isn’t enough to give you pause, pesticides used in cotton cultivation are showing up in disposable pads and tampons too and have been linked to birth defects, infertility, breast cancer, sterility, and respiratory problems.
Also, the plastic and glue backing on disposable pads reduces air circulation and creates a stagnant environment in which some bacteria thrive, causing vaginal irritation and yeast infections.
2. Why is organic cotton so important?
To make one non-organic cotton pad set, it takes about one third of a pound of chemicals, such as chlorine, pesticides, dioxins, and heavy metals including chromium to fix colors. Chromium is considered dangerous to people, wildlife, and also is damaging to the earth. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than 53 million pounds of pesticides and 1.6 billion pounds of synthetics were used in cotton production in 1996. Cotton, which constitutes 3% of the world cropland, uses about 23% of the world’s insecticides to grow it.
3. How are Sckoon Pads different from other washable pads?
Sckoon products are a fantastic brand of washable pads because they have:
A variety of colors and prints, all made with low impact dyes.
Three sizes to choose from; Mini, Day, and Night 100% organic certified Egyptian cotton.
A unique design that allows you to replace the liner when you need to, rather than the whole pad 100% organic cotton thread.
Nickel free snaps to avoid allergic reactions and skin irritation.
Sckoon OrganicPlus Pads are 100% organic certified Egyptian cotton plus built-in leak-resistant sheet
4. How do I use a Sckoon pad?
(1) Sckoon Menstrual Pads come with 100% Organic Super-soft main pad & a liner (Night/Postpartum Pads come with two liners).
(2) Place the Super-soft liner into the pockets – practical design allows you to change only liner part any time you like, not the entire pad.
(3) The print side of Sckoon Menstrual Pads touches your underwear. Fold the wings over the crotch and close the snaps.
(4) That is it. Sckoon provides you with a comfortable feeling all day long. You will feel the difference.
5. I have a heavy flow. Won’t cotton pads leak?
Just like any other menstrual product, you will need to monitor and change your pads as needed to avoid leaking, but organic cotton cloth pads will probably surprise you with their natural ability to absorb moisture and keep you feeling clean. An added bonus is that on lighter days, you can refold your Sckoon liner each time you go to the bathroom and enjoy a fresh liner without actually having to change it. All the pads available at Applemilky have a built-in leak resistant sheet to reduce leakage drastically.
6. How do I care for my new Sckoon Cloth Menstrual Pads?
Sckoon pads are machine washable and safe to put in the dryer, although you may choose to air dry them. For maximum absorbency, wash your new pads and liners once or twice before using them to remove the cotton natural oils. After use, rinse and soak them with laundry soap or other cleaning agent in cold water, and then wash and dry like you would anything else.
One user has come up with her own easy way of caring for her cloth pads:
Before I started using cloth pads, my first thought was that it could be lots of work to take care of them (washing and so on), but thank God, it’s not! What I do is just keep a bucket with a lid in the bathroom and I just throw the used pads and liners in there. The bucket has cold water and sometimes a few drops of Tea Tree Oil for extra sanitizing. Then I just change the water every day and when I’m done with my period, I throw the used pads and liners into the washing machine. That’s it.
7. How many Sckoon pads do I need?
Of course it’s going vary from woman to woman, but a good number to start with is 2 Mini pads, 4 Day pads, and 2 Night pads. If your flow is lighter, you may only need one night pad. Additional Day and Night pads, or extra liners, are a good idea for heavier flows and if you like to change more frequently.
8. What if I have a heavy flow or if I’m using Sckoon pads for postpartum?
Try our longer night pads for best results. They are 34cm in length, and come with two organic cotton liners. You can also add additional liners for extra absorbency and protection.
9. Can I use Sckoon pads for incontinence?
Sckoon OrganicPlus Mini Pads are a perfect choice for incontinence. They are small, 22cm long and easy to carry in your handbag. They are organic cotton and convenient. You can use them with or without the liner and the super soft cotton will help prevent irritation and allow your skin to breathe, which is especially important for people who use them every day.
9. What do I do about changing and storing pads when I am away from home?
A zip-lock bag is a handy solution, but we also offer a Sckoon leak-proof pouch for storing fresh or used pads and liners too. As soon as you come home, soak the used pads in cold water with laundry soap and wash them as usual.
